Getting Your Dental Implants to Stick—Faster
Nobody likes waiting. Especially when it comes to dental implants. You’ve had the surgery, the post is in, and now you’re just… waiting for the bone to catch up so you can finally get your crown and get back to eating normally. That’s where we bring in Near-Infrared (NIR) light. The whole idea is to jumpstart that “bone-to-implant” connection. Instead of just letting nature take its course, we use light to tell the bone to get moving.
How it actually works (without the textbook talk)
Think of NIR light as a deep-tissue wake-up call. It travels right through the gums and hits the bone where the implant sits. Inside your cells, there are these little power plants called mitochondria. The NIR light hits a specific enzyme there, and suddenly, the cells have a massive surge of energy. This energy tells the bone-building cells (the osteoblasts) to work overtime. They multiply faster, they lay down minerals quicker, and the titanium post gets locked in place way sooner than it would on its own.
The tricky part: Getting the dose right
We can’t just blast the area with light. If the heat gets too high, you’ll actually burn the soft tissue, which is the last thing anyone wants. That’s why we stick to a very specific window—between 800nm and 1000nm. It’s the “sweet spot” where the light goes deep enough to hit the bone but doesn’t cook the gums. It’s a delicate balance. Too little power and nothing happens. Too much, and you’ve got a problem. We’ve spent a lot of time dialing in that exact power level so it’s safe and effective.
Making it work in a real mouth
Designing a tool for the inside of a mouth is a headache. It’s cramped, it’s wet, and there’s no room for bulky gear. We made our emitters narrow so they actually fit in there, but we kept the beam steady so the light hits where it’s supposed to. But here is the thing: every patient is different. Some people have bone that’s dense like a rock, others have bone that’s more like a sponge. They absorb light differently. You have to adjust the dose based on who is sitting in your chair. And you’ve got to make sure the device is coupled perfectly to the tissue. If there’s a gap, the light just bounces off the surface, and you lose that spark that triggers the healing.
